The Zachary Hebda Foundation was created as living memorial to a normal healthy five year old boy who was diagnosed with leukemia the day after Thanksgiving in November 1998. Zack immediately began a course of treatment at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. His treatment included cocktails of chemotherapy. In January 1999, Zack's family learned that his illness, while in remission required a Bone Marrow Transplant due to a particular leukemia chromosome. Zack was transferred to Johns Hopkins Children's Center for the Bone Marrow Transplant. A search began, and it was quickly determined that Zack's mother was a match for the transplant. Zachary underwent his transplant in April 1999. Although the transplant was not successful, remarkably Zack's own bone marrow returned cancer free. In early June 1999, Zachary returned to Johns Hopkins Children's Center, where he died the morning of June 19th, 1999 as the result of an infection.
Friends and family created the foundation and the Race Against Childhood Cancer as a tribute to Zachary and other children who have been diagnosed with childhood cancers.
